Where the Salsa is Spicy and the Service is Sweet: Mexico Real
If you love supporting locally owned restaurants with genuine warmth and personality, Mexico Real Family Restaurant deserves a spot on your Colorado Springs list. With three locations around the city, this family-run favorite is known for its authentic flavors, colorful decor, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve been coming there for years.
My first-ever visit to Mexico Real brought me to their Sinton Rd location – I’ve always heard great things, and this visit definitely lived up to it. The restaurant is cozy, full of character, and the food hit the spot.
Let’s Talk Food!
As soon as we were seated, we were greeted with chips, classic salsa, and warm bean dip — and this is where Mexico Real really shines.
⭐ The Salsa (Especially the Sunday Salsa!)
The regular salsa was fresh, bright, and so good we immediately asked for a refill. And honestly, is it even a Mexican restaurant experience if you don’t overdo it on chips and salsa?
Then they brought out their special jalapeño salsa that they only make on Sundays, and… wow. It had a serious kick and so much jalapeño flavor, and even with the heat, we kept going back for more.
I ordered the Real Margarita with Don Julio añejo, and although it was a little on the sweeter side, it’s exactly what you want in a classic marg — cold & refreshing. It paired perfectly with the mountain of chips and salsa we kept working our way through.
The Mains
For mains, all three of us ordered something different, which made it fun to try a little bit of everything!
The ceviche was a tomato-based style, almost like a fresh, vibrant seafood cocktail. It had that bright citrus flavor you want, mixed with a rich tomato base that made it feel hearty and refreshing at the same time. It tasted super fresh and was such a nice contrast to all the warm dishes on the table.
The tacos de birria were cozy and flavorful — tender meat, warm tortillas, and consommé that tied it all together. They had that comforting, homemade feel that you only get at a family-owned place.
The carne asada was wonderfully tender with a really nice, savory seasoning. It felt like a true comfort dish & the kind of plate that reminds you why classic Mexican food is so loved.
You can’t skip the sopapillas!
We wrapped up with sopapillas, and they were a highlight – warm, lightly crisp on the outside & soft on the inside. They tasted like the kind of dessert you grew up eating at your favorite family restaurant. The perfect way to end the night!
Final Thoughts
Mexico Real serves classic, comforting dishes everyone knows and loves, and the real magic is in the experience. The staff treats you like family, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can feel how much pride goes into the restaurant.
If you’re in Colorado Springs, looking for great salsa, friendly faces, and that cozy local charm, Mexico Real Family Restaurant is a place you’ll be glad you stopped at — especially on a Sunday when the jalapeño salsa is here!
